L’Ospedale Maggiore (entrata da via Agostino Bassi)
The second and historic entrance to the Ospedale Maggiore, which, after crossing the garden, leads into the “Cloister” known as the “Pharmacy”. The building is squared. The ground floor portico features sixteen round arches (four on each side) to which corresponds a smaller, slimmer portico on the upper floor with forty smaller arches (ten on each side). The arches are made of terracotta and enclose, in relief, bands with pre-Raphaelesque style friezes and designs. A terracotta round dish emerges between the two shutters of the arches resting on the abacus of the column, on the ground floor, with a dove holding an olive branch in its beak, the symbol of the “Holy Spirit”.
